Sustainability on a Shoestring

Metro Housing is working in conjunction with Sustainable Action Values Everyone (SAVE), and our local government partners – Marrickville Council and the City of Canterbury, on a new project called Sustainability on a Shoestring. The Sustainability on a Shoestring project provides information and education about free and low cost ways to save energy at home. One of the key features of the project will be the home self assessment workshops that will teach tenants tips to reduce their energy use, and in turn keep more money in their pockets!

Sustainability on a Shoestring is a pilot project, putting Metro Housing at the forefront of resource development in environmental sustainability initiatives.

The first of the workshops commenced on November 23rd 2010, at the Herb Greedy Hall in Marrickville. The workshop focused on practical tips for a low cost Christmas and involved a'do-it-yourself' session on creative re-use of Christmas decorations and gift ideas. The workshop showed tenants ways to create low cost Christmas gifts which minimise the impact on the environment, reduce household costs and are fun to make.

Early in 2011, Sustainability on a Shoestring will be offering more practical cost saving workshops. The emphasis will be on home self assessment tools – showing tenants how to complete minor household repairs that will reduce energy bills. Participants will learn how to replace their fridge seals, find and fix drafts under doors and windows, monitor and lower the amount of energy being used by appliances. With these handy skills up their sleeves there will be great savings – the cost of professional repairers, time, money and the environment!

We're really looking forward to Sustainability on a Shoestring in 2011! If you are a tenant wanting to participate please contact Maddy at Metro on 9560 5331. The next workshops will be catered and we need to know numbers!
